The Independent Living Center of Southern California Celebrates 47 Years of Service to Persons with Disabilities!

1976 ILCSC Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Independent Living Center of Southern California (ILCSC) is celebrating 47 Years of service to our community this July, 14 years before the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) came into existence. The ILCSC has been a leader in disability rights since its beginning and worked, with the assistance of Los Angeles City Councilmember Ernani Bernardi, to establish the first “Blue Curb” law in the State. This historic first disabled parking space designation is in front of the ILCSC Van Nuys Service Office.

The ILCSC was founded by Norma Jean Vescovo, ILCSC Executive Director; Darrell McDaniel, Lawyer; and Lou Knau, Bob Campbell, Disability Advocates. There have been so many others who have furthered the cause of ILCSC Independent Living services, including our esteemed Board of Directors (past and present) John Vescovo, President; Dale Thalley, Vice President/Treasurer; Brenda Gillis, Secretary; Irwin Rosenberg; Tom Ritter; Michael Hansel; Helene Kitahara; Humberto Quintanar; Chi Liu; Robin Gillins; Ben Hodges; Basil Calis; Lise Wienberg; Kirk Kilgour; Gale Williams; Bud Brown; and Dick Wooten. We also cannot say enough about the hard work and dedication of our Staff Members throughout the years.

The ILCSC has built upon a strong foundation and is looking forward to an even wider and stronger “Path to Independence” for our future clients.

Mission Statement: The Independent Living Center of Southern California is dedicated to providing the essential services which will offer the opportunity to seek an individual path towards independence, while educating the community.

The ILCSC provides a wide range of services to a growing population of persons with disabilities – including Youth, Older Adults, & Veterans. We serve a large geographic area in both the City and County of Los Angeles, California, including Glendale, Burbank, the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita; and the Antelope Valley, including Lancaster, Palmdale, and a portion of Kern County.

We rely upon Government and State funding, and private donations from the public. Any amount you can give to assist us is much appreciated. With your help, many persons with disabilities will be able to travel the ILCSC “Path to Independence.”
